1. Measurement & Monitoring

The OPM-1 continuously measures and displays a range of critical electrical parameters, including:

• Electrical Parameters: Voltage (V), Current (A), Frequency (Hz), Active Power (kW), Reactive Power (kvar), Apparent Power (kVA), Power Factor (PF), Active Energy (kWh), Reactive Energy (kvarh).

• Other Parameters: Demand, Phase Sequence.

2. Protection Functions

This is the core value of the OPM-1. It provides multiple adjustable protection functions that trigger alarms or directly trip circuit breakers upon detecting abnormal conditions. Key protections include:

• Overcurrent Protection: Protects equipment from damage due to excessive current.

• Under-voltage / Over-voltage Protection: Monitors that voltage remains within a safe range.

• Reverse Power Protection: Crucial for generators, it prevents a generator from operating as a motor (driven by the grid), which could damage the prime mover (e.g., a diesel engine).

• Stator Earth Fault Protection (via external transformers): Detects earth faults in generator windings.

• Phase Sequence Protection: Ensures the correct phase rotation in polyphase systems.

3. Busbar/Feeder Protection: Used for monitoring and protecting a section of a busbar or an outgoing circuit in a distribution system.

Position in a System

The OPM-1 is typically installed in the main switchboard or generator control panel. It is connected to the main circuit via Voltage Transformers (VTs) and Current Transformers (CTs) to continuously acquire power data. Its relay outputs are connected to the shunt trip coil of a circuit breaker. When a fault is detected, it sends a signal to trip the breaker, thereby isolating the faulty equipment.
