AMA stands for the core unit of the Adaptive Motion Control or Absolute Accuracy system. It is commonly known as the AMA Option Board or AMA Control Unit.

The AMA system is an advanced ABB robot feature designed to significantly improve the robot’s absolute positioning accuracy.
Problem it Solves: In theory, a robot moves to a commanded position based on a mathematical model. In reality, factors like gear backlash, link weight, mechanical tolerances, and thermal expansion cause slight deviations between the robot’s actual position and its theoretical position (absolute accuracy error). This is unacceptable for high-precision applications.
How it Works: The AMA system compensates for these errors through sophisticated software algorithms and a calibration process. During factory acceptance or field installation, the robot undergoes precise measurement to generate a unique set of error compensation parameters. This parameter set is stored in the AMA Option Board (the 3HNE 04687-103).
Simple Analogy: The AMA is like a “personalized calibration profile” for the robot. This board holds the unique “recipe” that allows this specific robot to move with greater accuracy.
It is typically a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) or an electronic module.
It is installed inside the robot controller, specifically on the baseboard or a dedicated slot of the Computer Main Unit (DSQC).
It is not a peripheral device that users operate directly, but rather a core component integrated within the control system.
